How it works

Cloud DRM integrates with your packager and encrypts your content. When the end-user wants to play the video, the player app sends us a license request. We check with your system, and, if the user is authorized to watch the content, issue a decryption key back to the player.

Frequently Asked Questions

DRM (Digital Rights Management) is a technology that protects digital content from illegal copying, downloading, and redistribution. It encrypts video and audio files so that only authorized users with a valid license can watch them.

In the video and streaming industry, DRM is used by media platforms, broadcasters, sports rights holders, and content distributors to control how, when, and on which devices viewers can access their content.

DRM works in three steps:

  1. During packaging, the video is encrypted with a cryptographic key
  2. That key is stored securely on a DRM license server
  3. When a user presses play, their video player sends a license request to the server. If the user is authorized — for example, they have an active subscription — the server sends back the decryption key, and the player unlocks and plays the video.

The whole process typically takes less than a second and is completely invisible to the viewer.

Without DRM, any viewer with access to your stream could freely download, copy, and share your content. If you want to monetize your videos (whether your own or licensed), that poses a problem.

DRM also allows you to share your videos in a business model that depends on controlled access, such as:

  • Regular subscriptions that expire when a user cancels them
  • Video rentals that expire after 48 hours
  • Pay-per-View events with single-use tickets.

For platforms that distribute licensed or premium content — blockbuster movies, sports, professional courses — DRM is often required by contract.

These are the three largest DRM systems that dominate the video streaming industry. Each of them is owned by a different company and works with different platforms:

  • Google Widevine — used on Chrome, Firefox, Android devices, Chromecast, most Android TVs and Smart TVs.
  • Microsoft PlayReady — used on Windows, Microsoft Edge, Xbox, and some Smart TV platforms.
  • Apple FairPlay — used exclusively on Apple platforms: Safari on macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and Apple TV. No third-party alternatives are allowed on Apple devices.

Because no single DRM covers all devices, any streaming platform that wants to reach all viewers needs to implement all three.

Multi-DRM means protecting your content with multiple DRM systems simultaneously, so that your viewers can watch it on any device or browser.

Because Google Widevine, Apple FairPlay, and Microsoft PlayReady each work on different platforms, a streaming service that only supports one of them will be unable to reach a large portion of its audience. With Multi-DRM, the content is encrypted once using the Common Encryption (CENC) standard, and the license server automatically delivers the right license for whatever device the viewer is using.

From the viewer's perspective, it is seamless — they just press play, and it works on any device.
